Designing something on a building scale solely for the sake of beauty is becoming more and more of a luxury in a world that is rapidly moving towards global warming, exploitation of resources, collapse of waste management and natural habitat destruction. My main goal was to design a public building that corresponds with the site, its cultural background, built environment and existing vegetation, consists mainly of natural materials and is sustainable in both function and design. And besides, looks pretty. Thus was born the upcycling center, which snakes along the shape of the site, taking its trees and the neighboring buildings into consideration, following the topography differences with a half-story jump. Its main spaces are a shop and a community workshop area in the front, a sewing and a carpenter area in the back. A row of windows runs along the higher side of the mono-pitched roof, fitting into the grid of wooden columns, allowing the sun to shine through the building.
