Turning onto the access road to Gerla, I head straight toward the gate tower of the former Wenckheim manor, then stop before the wrought iron gate that has been locked for decades. Since my childhood I have known the local memories tied to it; during my diploma project I ventured inside and discovered its hidden, decaying treasures. In my work I tried to open its closed doors through my presence there, and to continue its story in line with its surroundings, serving the local people. I imagined creating a home between the walls of the ruin with my future family, while the courtyard opens again for all, and Gerla’s communities gather around the festive table in the great hall. Slowly, with simple means, the manor comes back to life. The aim is not total reconstruction, but to know it well, learn from it, and use it with care.
